Can Dzeko deliver the title to City?

January 6th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

MANCHESTER City go into 2011 two points off the top of the Premier League albeit having played two more games than rivals Manchester United.

Roberto Mancini’s defensive set up at the Emirates where a 0-0 was deemed sufficient may prove costly.

The price could be the £27 million City are preparing to buy Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg. Will Mancini will be brave enough to pair Carlos Tevez with the Bosnian and pick Adam Johnson to lay on the through balls and crosses instead of packing his defensive midfield?

Their game with Manchester United on February 12 at Old Trafford may be decisive. They are goods to pull it off at 7.00.

Arsenal are 4.00 and only have games against Spurs in February and Manchester United at the end of April to play against the bigger teams. If they lose to Barcelona in the Champions League, it could be a blessing. Manchester City are also still embroiled in the Europa League.

Chelsea’s seeming implosion in the second quarter of the season has not been halted by the return of stalwarts Frank Lampard and Michael Essien in midfield. The side that lost to Wolves was with the one exception of Ramires probably their strongest line-up and one that romped off with title in a blaze of goals in the spring of 2010.

Goals though have become a problem with Didier Drogba under par with malaria although they scored plenty without him last year too. They are 1.20 to finish in the top four but currently resting uncharacteristically in fifth behind Tottenham who are 2.20 to squeeze into the elite.

Spurs are good odds at 25.00 but like Chelsea lag a long way back…United though still have five games to play against the teams chasing them. Those 15 points are going to matter as too will the stamina of those midtable sides who have over or underperformed so far this season.

Too good to go down?

THE fall out from the Christmas results in the Premier League has raised the spectre of at least one big name club being relegated this season.

The spritely form of all three promoted sides may ensure their safety for another year. Newcastle are eighth, Blackpool are 13th with games in hand and even West Brom in 16th have shown they are a force to be reckoned with under former Chelsea midfielder Robert di Matteo.

So tight is it at the foot of the table that West Ham are bottom but three points would lift them up to fourteenth. Five points cover half the league. The betting goes up to Sunderland in sixth at 50.00 who are 12 points clear. West Ham are 1.70 for the drop, along with Wolves and Wigan both of whom have also shown they can mix it with most teams, albeit like Blackpool they do not seem to have the crowds to support a Premier League operation.

Liverpool have 25 points and are 25.00 to be relegated. Neighbours Everton also have 25 points but are 30.00. Aston Villa are only one point off the bottom and are down to 4.50 in the betting. February looks a tough month for Villa too with games against both Manchester sides and away trips to Birmingham and a critical match away to Wigan.

West Ham have Arsenal and Everton on the radar as well as the glamour of a Carling Cup semi finals back to back with Birmingham whom they then face again in February. Birmingham’s form may be as important to the teams around them as to themselves. They have only 22 points.

The same is true of Liverpool who after a visit to Manchester United in the FA Cup face all the potential disaster candidates before resuming Europa League duties on February 17 against Sparta Prague.

History points to the fact that no side is ever too good to go down.If 40 points is the target – and possibly it may not be enough – then six wins is the target for all these clubs.

Paulie Malignaggi goes down under a barrage of punches from Amir Khan in their WBA super lightweight World Championship bout at Madison Square Garden in New York. Khan is 1.35 to beat the Argentine Marcos Maidana in Las vegas on Saturday night. The man from Buenos Aires is unbeaten except for a controversial split decision in February to the Ukrainian Andreas Kotelnik 115-114, 113-115, 115-113 whom Khan then beat to take the title.

Maidana then knocked out the undefeated Victor Manuel Cayo, whose record included 16 KOs from 24 wins. Known as a pugilist, Maidana will bring the fight to Khan who will rely on his speed and acumen to outbox the Argentine in what purists are billing as potentially the bout of the year.
